STRAWBERRY POINT, UTAH
The C. A. Hughes family is a camping family. When the aunts and uncles were small, they and all the families in Mesquite would load up their wagons and go to White Rock to camp. This was their summer vacation.
There were Hughes Reunions held at Fish Lake and Pine Valley. These reunions included most of the Grandpa James Hughes and Grandma Carmelia Burgess families.
When the C. A. Hughes family was large enough, they would hold their own reunions, usually at Pine Valley. Many of the 3rd and 4th generations grew up going to Pine Valley for a 2 week summer vacation. What a treat and memory maker. For those of you who missed those choice days with Grandpa and Grandma, uncles, aunts, and cousins, take a walk down memory lane with those who were lucky enough to experience such outings.

(Art's Note..OKAY, lets get those memories to me so we can post them here)

One summer day in 1974 or 1975, Don Lee came home from a trip he had taken to Strawberry Point, Utah. He was really excited about some property that had just opened up for sale. It was beautiful, green, and a great spot for family camping. He told Uncle Dee about it and Uncle Dee became very excited and told the rest of the family.

The Hughes Brothers had cattle on the range in Alton, Utah, not very far from Strawberry and since they had to make a trip to check on the cows, Uncle Dee and Uncle Len decided to drop by Strawberry and check on the lots that were being sold. They found them to be just as beautiful and wonderful as Don Lee had said they were. They chose the two lots where the community center is now, then came home to talk to the other members of the family.    Everyone agreed that such a place was needed. Even back then, the parks were full and you had to have reservations to get in to camp. Each of the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation families were asked to put in $50 each, if they felt they could afford it. The money was collected and the land was paid for. After these lots were bought, other members of the family began to purchase their own lots close by. This area is known as "Hughesville" by everyone on the mountain.
The family held two or three reunions here. They built the community center and camp sites around the center trying to preserve the trees.

During the reunion in the summer of 1977, Uncle Esmond dedicated the community center as a permanent place for our reunions and a gathering place where our families could meet and be together.
Each year we try to clean up and improve the property a little more. To be able to make improvements we need to have one or two work days during June or July. In the past Lewis has scheduled work days and only a few members of the family have shown up. (Not enough to do what should have been done). This summer a permanent, covered pavilion was put up. PLEASE PLAN TO ATTEND THE WORK DAYS.
