GLADYS HUGHES SMITH

I was the second child of Leonard and Chyrrel Hughes, born on June 9, 1936, in St. George, Utah. I attended school in the Virgin Valley Schools and graduated from high school in 1954. While in school, I participated in school plays and also was a majorette and participated in many parades. After graduating from high school, I moved to Salt Lake and enrolled in hair styling school, and now 50 years later I'm still cutting and styling hair. That's a lot of hair!!!

While living in Salt Lake, I met and married Louis Gail Parry, and had my first son, Allen Lee, born 10 December, 1956. That marriage ended in divorce after about three years.

Eventually, I met and married the love of my life, Ralph LeGrande (Hank) Smith, from American Fork, Utah. He adopted Allen and we were soon blessed with three more children. Jodi Linn, born 26 April 1961; Wendy Jo, born 1 May 1962; and Michael LeGrande, born 10 May 1965. Mike's life was ended tragically when he was 19 years old and was killed in a car accident as he was on his way to attend college. The other kids are very high achievers and are very successful in their fields. Allen is a corporate Finance Officer in Colorado. Jodi is a Pediatric Neurosurgeon in Indianapolis, Indiana, at one of the largest children's hospitals in North America. Wendy is an Accountant for the Del Webb Corporation.

Allen is the only one married and he and his wife, Connie, have four children. Hank and I work side by side every day. Four days a week we are at the beauty shop and one day a week we work at the Las Vegas Temple. The years have been good to us and we've had many opportunities to serve and share the gospel.
